A Series of Attempts

This is a performance about the human search for Truths-within and without-and the unexpected places it takes you.

The underlying theme is that through our journeys in life, we are often placed in situations that appear to be one way but, in hindsight, reveal themselves to be quite different than we initially thought. Painful experiences turn out to be beneficial and helped us to grow. Likewise, things that we thought were wonderful or good may have actually been hindrances. In short, life is full of paradoxes— and the reality is many times we simply just do not know–and have to be patient.

Filmed by Kamau Bilal (kamaubilal.com). Performance/words by Askia Bilal.

  ———————-

Askia Nasir Bilal is a traveler, story-teller/poet and artist.  His wish is to share his humanity with his fellow travelers passing through, to share his attempts at saying something and hope that you find something to benefit you. His words have a way of getting under your skin and rising to a fever pitch. The ambience he creates in words , art and mood takes you to ‘dizzying depths’ within your self and opens windows you’d never paused to see before, to the outside world and humanity at large. It is a pleasure to succumb to the experience that Askia Bilal creates even if it feels like it will eat you up from inside. He has moved around.. New York, Texas, Missouri, Michigan, Quatar; Teaching art at schools, finishing his Masters in Fine Arts and is now currently teaching at a university in the Middle East.  ”A Series of Attempts” is one of his favorites pieces  and it was filmed with his brother Kamau Bilal during the course of his MFA thesis exhibition–an interpretation of the visual work through the lens of performance and language. Its themes are central to the project he is working on at the moment.  Visit his page here .
